The Art and Design Research Institute (ADRI), Middlesex University London is offering up to three Research Degree Studentships for full-time students to be taken up at the start of the autumn semester, September 2009. The awards are for a period of three years, subject to annual monitoring.
The Studentships are granted for UK and EU-level tuition fees for full-time research degree students and an annual living grant of £15,000. Non-EU students are eligible to apply, but if successful will need to make their own financial arrangements to cover the difference in fees. The successful applicants for the Studentships may be asked to undertake an average up to 40 contact hrs per annum over three years (not more than 60 hours in any one academic year) of undergraduate teaching, or an equivalent amount of research assistance or research administration in the ADRI, as a part of their Studentship.
Research conducted within ADRI comprises a wide range of research practices across fine art, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, electronic arts, history of art and design, and product design engineering. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, 85 per cent of research across the institute’s work was rated as internationally recognised or world leading.
Full time studentships are available in all subject specialisms. Students have the opportunity for cross disciplinary working, and current students are often co-supervised by staff from other departments and other universities. Supervision is provided by a high-calibre team of research-active staff, who regularly achieve international peer-reviewed publications and major exhibitions. You will be joining a group of about 25 PhD students, of around 100 in the School of Arts and Education.
The institute’s location in London offers a number of significant world class resources in the arts, with one of the world’s largest communities of art and design practitioners, related industries, cultural activities, and museums and galleries unrivaled elsewhere. The extensive workshop provision is among the best in London, with a range of traditional and state of the art machinery.
Available disciplines
The Lansdown Centre specialises in the application of technology, especially digital technologies, to creative work, emphasising the way technological change can prompt rethinking of existing knowledge. Research projects in the Centre address creative and analytical aspects in varying proportions. For an overview of recent research student work, see
http://www.cea.mdx.ac.uk/?location_id=106.
We are particularly interested in research proposals in the following areas (but are happy to see other ideas proposed): locative media, spatial and located audio, interactive visual representations of historical time, visual narrative and interaction.
Design disciplines have existing interdisciplinary research and research interests across all subjects including: sustainable design; human-centred design; crafts including jewellery; interior design; product design; robotics; and research through practice. Current student research is diverse, including co-supervision not only from traditional design subject specialisms, but also from other disciplines such as psychology, biological sciences, social sciences, psychotherapy, and business studies, employing a wide range of research methods drawn from the arts and sciences, and often working collaboratively with industry.
Argentium Sterling Silver is a new alloy of silver with remarkable properties of importance to design-makers. Researchers work with the manufacturers Argentium International to creatively explore the material using practice-based investigations.
The Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture holds a number of internationally important collections relating to British domestic design and architecture. An accredited public museum, MoDA is also an integrated learning resource and provides excellent modern accommodation for teaching and exhibiting, as well as access to its extensive archives.
One studentship may be reserved for work on the MoDA collections, for example to investigate the historical interaction and evolution of makers and designers with clusters of objects and texts from the museum’s collections.

Fine Art research investigates the meanings of art practice today through questions of interpretation and evaluation relating to the art object from the studio as the site of production to the various forms of circulation and display. These questions are not only formal in nature, but unfold through issues concerning social and historical significance, (including environmental and ecological concerns) ethics and aesthetics, subjectivity, the institutions of art/artworld, and the impact of new technologies on lived experience. Contemporary art practice is viewed as both media specific and inter- or multi-disciplinary, and as a global phenomenon. Engagement with theoretical and critical issues is integral to practice-led work that is the core of research, and brings a rich diversity of interests and concerns to the culture of the group.
History of Art and Design research develops from the history of visual culture at Middlesex as an interdisciplinary inquiry into the significance of the visual in all aspects of social and cultural life, previously associated with the journal Block and related publications. Current research has strong links with the studio disciplines across art and design with particular interests in the archive, curatorial practice and theory, transcultural/post-colonial histories and theories as investigative tools for the study of contemporary art and design; sonic arts; drawing; photography and the body; writing as a critical, interpretive and performative practice; and new theories on space, place and location including issues of globalisation There are also significant associations with MoDA, as well as external agencies such as major galleries, museums and publishers.
Further details are available on the ADRI website.
