Within the Department of Technology Management and Economics, it is important for both our research and teaching to provide new insights into how companies develop their business models in response to a growing market awareness of sustainability.
Description of the research project
“Green changes in construction business models”: the overall aim of this project is to study how existing business models in the construction sector have been affected and changed in recent years as a consequence of greater ecological awareness within firms, among their customers and suppliers; in response to changes in relative prices for resources, and changes in government regulations and policies. Which are the characteristics of the changes in business models, e.g. moving activities to or from suppliers or designing new contractual incentives? How are these business model changes to be derived from the original knowledge bases of firms and the successive learning they undergo when carrying out projects that incorporate green elements, such as waste reduction or energy management? Which is the relative strength of the underlying factors that have driven the changes in business models? Which are the typical sources of new (primarily ecological) knowledge relied upon by firms who change their business models?
The project is financed primarily by Formas, the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning, and it will be carried out in cooperation between the Service Management research group and the Management and Economics of Innovation research group.
