British Ambassador on New and Simpler Points-Based UK Visa System for International Studetns Starting on 31st March 2009
New changes announced by the UK Government will make the process of obtaining a UK study visa more straightforward and transparent than ever before. From 31st March 2009, the UK Student visa application process will be simplified under a Points-Based assessment process.
International students who want to study in the UK will need to pass a points-based assessment and score 40 points. They will get 30 points for a visa letter from a licensed sponsor (such as a university or college) and 10 points for showing that they have access to the required maintenance funds to support themselves and cover costs such as fees and living expenses. Potential students can access a points calculator on the UK Border Agency’s website to check whether they are eligible for a visa before they even apply, making the whole system more straightforward.
British Ambassador Martin Hatfull said: “Last year, almost 1000 Indonesian nationals successfully applied for visas to study in the UK . I am keen to see these numbers grow. I hope these new improvements to make the visa process easier and clearer for genuine students will encourage many more Indonesians to consider the benefits of studying in the UK .”
For the first time, all UK colleges and universities that want to accept international students now need an official licence to do so. The licence provides assurance the language school, college or university is a genuine and approved educational institution. So far over a thousand UK institutions have signed up to sponsor international students.
